Ernie Blumke, Director At Large

My love for Fords began in the 1960's when an uncle of mine purchased a black Mustang Fastback GT in 1968.  It was equipped with a 390 V-8 and four speed tranny.  It was my first "gotta have dream car".  At the age of 16 in 1974 I purchased my second car and first Ford.  A pristine 1966 Ford Fairlane XL 500 from Brown Brothers Ford in downtown Vancouver, for the grand sum of $800.  It was a low mileage car with a 289 two barrel, console automatic, white with red interior.  I soon changed it from a run-of-the-mill car to a jacked-up, wide tired, 4 barrel 4 speed car.  Gas mileage went to hell but it was sure fun.  In 1977 a young fellow made me an unbelieveable offer of $2500 which I quickly grabbed and bought my first Mustang.  A 1968 Fastback GT 390 four speed car for a ghastly $3000!  Initially it was dark grey with black interior.  Nine years, one marriage and two paint jobs later (I changed engines too, to a 1969 428 Super Cobra Jet) I sold the now black GT to pay some bills after my divorce.  During the 9 years I owned the GT, I had many other cars of various brands too!  Of the Fords during that time, a 1965 very early production Mustang convertible.  It was powder blue with a 4 speed, 260 V-8 (generator too!), with no power top, no back up lights and the passenger seat didn't even move.  (My understanding is that this was a VERY early production  Mustang).  Also there was a '66 Mustang  6 cylinder coupe, a '66 Fairlane big block convertible, a '69 Torino GT Cobra (that's where I stole the 428 SCJ) a '68 Mustang 289 4- speed coupe, a '67 Ford pick-up and a '80 Mustang coupe.  (Not to mention numerous other brands during that time!)  Skipping ahead to 1999, we purchased a perfect 1992 red with white leather Mustang GT convertible specifically for my wife.  It had only 12,000 kms on it and we knew the original owner well and paid top dollar for it.  Good investment though!  We still have it and it looks great and runs perfectly.  In 2001 when the new Bullitt came out, I had to have one.  I ordered it in Dark Highland Green and boy is it fun!  I'll never sell it.  Many other Fords and other brands have come and gone over the years, but Mustangs, Torinos, and Shelbys are among my favourites.  (Oh, I do have an old numbers matching 4 speed Corvette too, but please don't hold it against me...it's not anywhere near as fast as my Bullitt!)
